Governor information and duties

The Governing Body of Colmore Schools is the accountable body for both the Infant and Junior Schools.

It provides support and advice to the headteachers of both schools and is responsible for planning their future direction, approving school improvement plans, and overseeing the schools' financial management and progress toward academic success.

 

Role of the Governing Body

The Core Functions of a Governing Body are:

  • Setting the strategic direction
  • Holding the headteacher to account for improving the school
  • Ensuring financial health, probity and value for money

At Colmore, the governing body aims to ensure that children are attending a successful school which has high expectations for their social and academic progress working within a supportive and caring environment. It strives to ensure that this is achieved via a broad, balanced curriculum enriched with creative opportunities.

The Governing Body sets the strategic direction of the schools by:

  • ​Setting the values, aims and objectives for the schools
  • Agreeing the policy framework for achieving those aims and objectives
  • Setting statutory targets
  • Agreeing the school improvement plans, including approving the budget and agreeing the staffing structures​

The Governing Body challenges and supports the school by monitoring, reviewing and evaluating:

  • The implementation and effectiveness of the policy framework
  • Progress towards targets
  • The implementation and effectiveness of the school improvement strategy
  • The budget and the staffing structure in the context of the values, aims and objectives of the schools

The Governing body ensures accountability by:​​​​​​​

  • Signing off the schools’ own self-evaluation report
  • Responding to Ofsted's findings when necessary
  • Recognising the Headteachers’ responsibility for the performance of the school
  • Ensuring parents and pupils are involved, consulted and informed as appropriate
  • Making information available to the community, ensuring parents and pupils are involved, consulted and informed as appropriate

Committee Structure

The Colmore schools have a federated governing body which means that there is one governing body for the two schools (Colmore Infant and Nursery School and Colmore Junior School). 

The Governing Body carries out its roles and responsibilities through Full Governing Body Meetings, Finance Committee Meetings and school visits.

Full Governing Body (FGB) 

This comprises of all of the governors and meets at least four times each academic year. The main function of this body is to ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; to ensure accountability for the performance of the school; and to make sure the school's funding is spent appropriately. 

Resources Committee

This committee assists and advises the Headteachers and Governing Body on matters relating to the budgeting and financial control of:

  • The schools delegated budget, Standards Fund and any other public money
  • School fund and any other money administered by the school
  • Other money held in the name of the school for which the Governing Body is responsible

Other responsibilities include:

  • To review and recommend for approval to the full governing body the first formal budget of the financial year
  • To review the budget and variances to the budget termly
  • To approve a three year financial plan
  • To oversee achievement of the Schools Financial Value Standard (SFVS)
  • To review the results of any financial audit and ensure any improvements identified are actioned
  • To review the use of the School Fund and other accounts, including an annual formal inspection of the accounts
  • To ensure that the building is well maintained and meet statutory testing requirements.
